Growing Hydroponics Methods

How do I use the hydroponic method accurately?
I have actually never heard of hydroponics before until last week when my class required that we grow seeds using this method.I was instructed to place a wet napkin in a little dish then place the different types of seeds on the wet napkin. Call me skeptical perhaps I am, but is that all I have to do or is there more. Also how soon would it be before I see results from this? As a class we weren't told what the seeds were so I really don't know specifics. I am sure growth varies some on the different types of seeds, but I just wanted to know about an average time. Thank you so much for your help.
All seeds need water to germinate. Many also need light.
Hydroponics (from the Greek words hydro water and ponos labour) is a method of growing plants using mineral nutrient solutions, without soil.
Here is a link to hydroponics you can do at home.

has anyone used aeroponics for growing anything.?
i am a botany student and am wanting any first hand info on using the method. i want to know if anyone has used it to grow bigger or brighter flowers or fruit. i have herd that it grows up to 50% faster than hydroponics. i have used hydroponics and am very happy with the results. i want to do some experiments with hydro and aero. please any first hand use. any web sites with any clubs or good kits or d.i.y. kits. any techniques or grow patterns. Any good plants to try out with the aeroponics. thanks for any useful info
I've had experience growing with different methods. I read once that during the coal era(forget what it's called) that the atmosphere was of higher percent CO2 possibly due to volcanic activity. At the time I was growing in a cistern under the back parch(old house) and since it was basically air tight I used CO2 tanks to increase the level. Great results. When hydroponics came out I built my own system that raised and lowered the water / nutrients. I read where it was the oxygen that was the key to my increasing success so when the liquid level was lowered I'd inject pure oxygen. Everything was done with timers. I cut the time from seedling to harvest to weeks instead of months. Remember I had a controlled environment for it to work so well. I haven't grown since the aero method came out but I can see where it could work. How about misting the top part with CO2 - water- nutrients and the roots mist them with O - water-nutrients. Something tells me it may be an expensive set-up and elaborate also. Happy growing

Kitchen Gardener Grow

Calling all kitchen gardeners!! I'm pondering chickpeas...?
Basically I'd like to know how easy/hard it is to grow chickpeas in a domestic kitchen garden? Can it be done? Is anyone doing it?
My Dear Rissa,

http://www.brian-bender.com/garden/archive/2003_july
The chickpea plant is interesting. The leaves are very tiny, and the entire plant has a fern-like appearance. I expected them to have big heart-shaped leaves like most other bean plants.
I’ve discovered there isn’t much information out there about growing chickpeas, especially in the home garden. I guess it just isn’t very popular, but why not? It likes dry soil!

Optimal Agronomic Management of Growing Chickpeas in the Semiarid Prairie
Gan, Y.T.1, B.G. McConkey1, P.R. Miller 2, C.L. McDonald1 and B. Nybo3
1Swift Current Research Centre, AAFC, 2 Montana State University
3 Wheatland Conservation Inc. Swift Current, SK.
The semiarid prairie represents a significant expansion opportunity for the pulse industry in western Canada, and it is the target area for chickpea production. However, agronomic guidelines for chickpea production suitable to this region have not been developed. Questions have been raised by producers regarding optimal management practices to obtain profitable seed yield and quality. Three field experiments were conducted at Swift Current Research Centre, in cooperation with Wheatland Conservation Area Inc. in 1998 and 1999, to determine the optimal agronomic management practices for establishing chickpeas in the semiarid prairie. In the first experiment, kabuli-type chickpea (Sanford and B-90) and desi-type chickpea (Myles) were used, to determine how the two types of chickpeas respond to phosphorous fertilizer in this drier region and the impacts of seeding depth and seeding date on seed yield and marketing quality. Seed size is a key factor in commercial kabuli chickpea markets with seed size greater than 8.6 mm commanding market premiums. Thus, in the second experiment, we determined how climatic and agronomic factors affected seed size fractions. Also, we screened out two seed size fractions (large vs small seeds) from the same seedlot and compared the yield differences between plants grown from the large seed and plants from the small seed. Seed cost of growing chickpea is quite high, as compared to other crops, while chickpea seedling emergence is usually low in the semiarid environment. Therefore, in the third experiment, we determined optimal seeding rate for both kabuli and desi chickpeas by assessing plant density per square area, days to flowering and maturity, and final seed yield and quality (e.g., seed weight and seed size fractions).
Responses of chickpea to fertilizer-P application were inconsistent between the two years. In 1998, the chickpea seed yield increased 7 to 11% with fertilizer-P at the rate of 17 to 34 lb actual P per acre, as compared to the non-P treatment. In 1999, however, no yield differences were found between the fertilizer-P treatments, although the fertilizer-P slightly increased dry matter production before flowering. Overall chickpea seed yield in 1998 was less than 1000 lb/ac, while in 1999 average yield was near 2000 lb/ac. Great soil moisture in 1999 favored rhizobial activities and symbiotical N-fixation, and reduced plant-to-plant competition for growth resources, which might have masked the possible effect from fertilizer-P as shown in 1998. Kabuli chickpea was planted at two depths (5-cm vs 10-cm). On average, plants emerging from the 5-cm depth produced a higher (5 to 10%) amount of dry matter at flowering than plants that emerged from the 10-cm depth. Consequently, the shallow seeding resulted in 2 to 6% higher seed yield than the deep seeding. Mean seed weight was higher for seeds harvested from the shallow-seeded plants than those of deep-seeded plants. Two seeding dates were used in each year with the early seeding date being between April 30 to May 5 and the late seeding date between May 16 to May 20. Averaged for the two years, the early-seeded kabuli produced 10 to 16% more yield for B-90 and 4 to 12% for Sanford. We observed that the early-seeded plants had a longer period of time between flowering and plant maturity, resulting for great seed set. In either year, the size of seeds planted did not have any impact on final grain yield. Climatic factors and the agronomic practices were shown to affect the seed weight and the seed-size fraction.

Apple Cider Vinegar Diet: Is this a Weight Loss Miracle?
Among the many remedies for weight loss is an old one that has been used for centuries as a cure. Apple cider vinegar has been touted as a weight loss aid that is considered a healthier alternative to diet pills, and other forms of extreme dieting. It’s inexpensive and you may already have a bottle sitting in your kitchen cabinet.
Maybe you’ve only thought of apple cider vinegar as an excellent condiment for salads, well, it also is touted as a natural remedy for several ailments. For our purposes, we are going to examine it’s use as a benefit for losing weight.
Drinking apple cider vinegar diluted in water is a popular weight loss tonic for many people, but does it really help you lose weight? That’s the real question and so far, independent scientific studies haven’t been able to conclusively prove that it works. Most accounts of successful weight loss on this diet comes from word of mouth.
This popular vinegar has gotten it’s miracle cure reputation because it’s believed to increase metabolism and causes food to turn to energy quicker. Some people also claim that apple cider vinegar cleanses the liver and, therefore, eliminates toxins so that food can be processed through the body easier.
Boosting it’s claim to fame is the revelation that ancient Egyptians also used apple cider vinegar as a weight loss cure. While this doesn’t mean it’s a miracle weight loss remedy, it does mean that its effects on the body have been appreciated for centuries.
It’s been shown that eating apple cider vinegar during or right before a meal can prevent a person from overeating, because it causes a sensation of fullness. This information comes from the results of a small study, but it seems encouraging. More studies need to be done, though, before any real beneficial conclusions can be made.
If you’re still interested in trying apple cider vinegar as a weight loss aid, there are different ways you can use it. In addition to putting it on your salad (use instead of wine vinegar), you can add two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar to a glass of water and mix in a little honey to improve the flavor. Another way is to buy apple cider vinegar tablets at the store, although these are often mixed with other substances like vitamin B6 and lecithin.
Because cider vinegar is so acidic, most recommend diluting it in water or juice before ingesting. Cider vinegar can damage your teeth, mouth and throat with regular use. Also, if you have any serious medical conditions, ask your doctor if it’s safe to drink this type of vinegar to avoid any unintended negative effects on medications you may be taking.
There’s some debate amongst natural remedy aficionados of the effectiveness of the clear type of apple cider vinegar normally found in local supermarkets. Some believe this clear type of vinegar has been distilled to the point of losing all it’s natural health benefits. They recommend using only organic apple cider vinegar, which is darker and may have residue floating inside the bottle.
However, there is no concrete evidence that one form is better than the other for weight loss. The good news is that apple cider vinegar contains natural vitamins and minerals, as well as potassium and fiber, so you’ll get some other healthy benefits from adding it to your diet.
