Backdraft Damper
What is the most energy efficient backdraft damper on bathroom/kitchen fans that vent through exterior walls?
We have several fans (one in kitchen, others in bathrooms) that vent out through exterior walls. Outside, each vent on the exterior walls has a gravity damper, basically just a sheet of metal that covers the grate and the opening into the flexible duct that feeds to the fan. That damper's purpose is to keep cold/hot outside air from penetrating into the house. With all our high tech insulation and thermal barriers, etc., it just seems crazy that there's nothing protecting the house from air blowing straight in than this flimsy little piece of metal that barely covers the opening. Is there a better system to keep outside air out of my house at these fan vents? Thanks!
I have seen basically 3 types of dampers for such vents:
1 the one big flap you describe
2 several small flaps
3 an internal flap that is spring loaded.
Keep in mind that most units (bath and kit fans) will have an internal flapper at the unit as well as the external one to keep out the birds. A drier would be an exception. Also most units do not have a powerful enough fan to open a very heavy damper.
You can get motorized dampers. These are usually used for an incoming air flow. The the cost of extra wiring and equipment usually makes this a road rarely traveled.
Limiting the amount of time that the fan (and damper) are on might generate some savings and this can be done with a switch that is also an automatic timer.
There is a problem in some houses that are too tight with indoor air quality. In places that are otherwise too tight air flow might be encouraged with a heat exchanger. This would also be an expensive alternative.
The best solution I have seen to maintaining your heat inside is to trap heat in a thermal mass (often masonry or tanks or salts or water.) When heat is held in this way instead of mostly in the air in your house then the house will only heat up or cool down slowly It is like a battery for heat.
