Base General

Any soldiers wives out there that could tell me about life on base?

My husband is currently in basic training, and as long as he gets stationed where we (me and our soon to be 2 sons) can go, we'll be moving to a base mid Aug, we don't know where yet; Im just wondering what life on base is like, just a general idea of what to expect, the pros and cons. Thanks a bunch!

It's not that bad, but I'd 100% prefer to not live on base.
Anyway- more than likely it will be a little more difficult to have civilian visitors-as you wont be able to access your house (on base) w/o a military ID.
It will be a lot easier for your husband b/c he's closer to work than he would be living anywhere else.
You wont pay your rent/utilities but you'll pay things like cable and internet.
Driving rules are enforced way more on base (no speeding, no talking on cell phone while driving, etc)
Depending on where you go, there will be a (sometimes very long) waiting list for on-base housing... Also- some communities go by your husbands rank. Where we are moving, my husband is a senior NCO so our house is a bit 'nicer' so to say than junior enlisted, but not as nice as the officers executive houses. We will be PCSing to a base that was just remodeled for mil housing, so it's all very nice and new. Some military housing looks like the projects.
I like living off base more... I guess I just feel more freedom, my friends can stop by whenever they want, etc. But we're having a harder time than we thought finding a home to purchase so we are moving on post until we find a new home.
You wont have a lease so if you dont like it you can leave whenever you want-it's just gotta be CLEAN.
You're required to keep up yardwork, etc. That's something that kicked my butt b/c I always had a lawn service, didn't even own a lawnmoer.

something i just thought of-childcare on base is genrally cheaper than off base-atleast from what i've experienced-you can use the on base childcare regardless of if you live on or off base, but it'd be easier if you lived on, obviously.
and who cares if people gossip. people gossip everywhere- i dont really notice b/c i dont do much worth gossiping about . security is nice, esp. with deployments. random people cant come to your door, or even within ten miles of it!
