Bulb Fixture
can I use a bulb with higher wattage in a lower wattage fixture?
We just had to purchase a new flourescent light fixture. It says on the package 32 watt. We could only find 40 watt bulbs for the type we need and size for the fixture. Is this 8 watt difference a big deal or is it fine? We looked everywhere for lower wattage bulbs but had no luck.
There are two potential problems with using larger wattage bulbs. First, the ballast or starter on the fixture may not have enough power to start the fluorescent light. The second may be heat production higher than the fixture can safely handle. However, as you pointed out, the 8 watt difference may be small enough to allow use of the 40 watt light. If would not be a problem to try it and make sure it starts completely.

Do I add the light bulb wattage or the light fixture wattage capacity when calculating the transformer needed?
I currently have a 300 watt transformer, and I wanted to add 2 more lights to the line. So to calculate the remaining capacity of the transformer, I wasn't sure if I should use actual wattage - using light bulb wattage or if I should use wattage capacity determined by the light fixture.
When dealing with electricity always use the highest rated device there is. If the fixture is higher rated then the bulb, then use its rating. You never want to be short and always want to have some to spare.
