Bulb Metal Halide
Appropriate Metal Halide Fixture For My Tank?
I have a tank which is 4 feet long and a little over 20 inches tall which I plan to keep corals in.
What would be an appropriate metal halide fixture and bulb strength for my fish tank? I can't hang the fixture from the ceiling (rented house) so are there any other options?

Oops sorry not 4 feet (I wish), I meant 3 feet.
Hi, the strength of the bulb will really depend on what type of corals you would like to keep. If you intend on lower light to medium light soft and stony corals you can get away with 2 x 125 watt Halides. If you want to keep clams and higher light SPS 2 x 250 would be your best bet.
You can always buy a prefabricated canopy that fits over your tank and install your halides in there or you can purchase a manufactured unit that can be placed above the tank.

what color spectrum do metal halide bulbs put off?
It varies, depending on the design of the bulb, and on how long the bulb has been in use (the spectrum shifts as the bulb ages).
Manufacturers usually advertise, or will provide on request, a profile of the bulb's color spectrum.
You get a rough idea of the colors of light from the bulb according to the bulb's "color temperature," which is expressed in degrees Kelvin (usually abbreviated "K"). Most bulbs are rated this way. A higher color temperature means more blue light, and a lower color temperature means more red and yellow light. Sunlight is approximately 5,000 degrees K (also written 5,000 K). Many aquarium lights are 10,000 K, which is more blue than the sun. 20,000 K is distinctly blue and is known as "actinic" light. This is often used for reef aquaria and in other situations where the desire is to simulate the light conditions in deep water or at night. (The blue light waves penetrate farther into the water than other colors, so if you're more than a few feet under water, everything looks blue. Moonlight is also much bluer than sunlight.)
