Can I make rice porridge by steaming the rice in my electric steamer?
I have a steamer that also has a rice bowl that can be put in the steam basket to cook rice. The manual says to put water and rice in the rice bowl but does not say now much (either for just steaming the rice or making rice porridge).
Can I make rice porridge using this method and if so please tell me how, including ratio of water to rice etc? Could there be problems with the rice sticking too much to the plastic rice bowl? (I know if rice porridge is done in a saucepan on the stove it has to be a non-stick one)
It would also be good to know the correct ratio for just steaming the rice normally.
I want to use my steamer because then I should be able to set and forget without having to check on it all the time.
For steaming rice in that kind of a cooker - you use the same ratio as other methods - 1 part rice to 2 parts water. So if you put in one cup of rice, you would put in one cup of water.
Porridge or congee probably would not work well in this kind of steamer - it would take longer and the steam wold run out and I'm thinking it may not bring it up to proper temperature.
Make your congee in a pot on the store or get a fuzzy logic type rice cooker to make it.
