Grow Light Coral
Can I grow any corals without upgrading my lights?
I have an eclipse hood with two 20 watt t8 lights. My tank is a 20 gallon long tank. Are there any corals I can grow with this kind of lighting? I do plan on buying a retrofit kit later, I just can't buy everything I need all at once.
Some soft corals that dont require a lot of light will be fine, like the sun corals which are mainly kept in more shaded areas.
plenty of sites out there that will tell you the lighting requirement of most types of corals.
I wouldnt even attempt to keep most LPS and deffo no SPS corals with only 20w

Is blue/pink spectrum lighting okay for corals?
I'm starting a 10 gallon nano reef, and all I have in there at this point is live rock. I always purchase my aquarium lighting from the hardware store, and for my heavily planted freshwater aquarium I bought a blue/pink spectrum florescent bulb, marketed as a "grow light" and I had extreme success. I hear corals like the blue part of the spectrum, but I can't find any "blue" lights. Is the purple-ish kind okay? I will have 2 17-watt bulbs over a 10 gallon.
You definitely want to get bulbs that are made for marine aquariums. Many freshwater and non-aquarium bulbs have spectrums that are either not natural or potentially harmful (as in encouraging nuisance algae growth if you got a plant grow light).
Finally if your 17W bulbs are NO (normal output) fluorescents, or even PC (power compact fluorescents), they will not be very strong. If you're going by some watts-per-gallon "rule", note that different bulbs (like a PC or NO fluorescent) have different amounts of light (lumens) per watt of energy. That's how a 20W PC can be brighter than a 100W regular incandescent bulb.
You could keep probably very low light corals like mushrooms, but even that is a stretch.
So, the options you have are stronger PCs, T5HO fluorescents, MH (metal halide), or LEDs (expensive to setup). PCs are good for low to medium light corals (even some higher light). The other lighting technologies are good for almost any corals and clams. If you would like to browse around lighting setups, try visiting a large saltwater vendor like drsfostersmith.com or marinedepot.com (or reefgeek.com for T5s). You may think that these lights are more expensive than what you can get at the hardware store, but they really are the only way you will get decent color and growth from your corals. If you think about it, you're paying the same price for each watt of energy, so it makes sense not only for colorful corals but also for your wallet to get efficient lighting that converts more of the energy into light.
Most corals for sale were collected mainly from brightly lit coral reefs. The blue spectrum (generally "14000 or more" kelvin) is an important spectrum for many corals. However, "purple" lighting is not natural. For PCs you would want a balance of 10000K and actinic bulbs, while T5s and MH have a huge variety of options.
