How long does it take for a hosta seed to germinate?
Hi, I have some hosta seeds that I need to plant in trays. How long before the seeds will become a bush?? Will I see growth this year or only next year ??? What are the easiest hosta seeds to grow and care for? I am a beginner gardener so will take any and all advise.
thanks
Hey Carrie,
Hostas can be sown either indoors or outdoors. If the seeds are fresh they can be direct sown outdoors as soon as they're ripe and will germinate with the next prolonged warm spell. If the seeds are stored for more than a month after being collected they can need stratification to germinate.
Stratification is the process of imitating nature, cold winter, and wet spring warm up. This will take time.
When hostas are germinated via Winter Sowing there will be some early germination in the flats...and then NOTHING....for a few weeks more. Evidently, some of the seeds just take more time to germinate because they need longer daylength and/or warmer nights. Anyway, just when you've almost lost your patience and think the seeds have failed, you will have a flush of green from the late germinating hosta seeds.

How do I grow Snow Pea sprouts?
I have some snow pea seeds, fresh from the pod.
They are currently soaking in water, which I think is what you're meant to do, but I dont know what to do next. Do I plant them in seed soil, or put them on a tray with damp paper towel, or what?
I want them to be edible sprouts.
Like this kind of thing:

Also, do I put them in the dark or in the light? Indoors or outdoors?
ACCUTALLY YOU NEED TO PLANT DRIED SEED , NOT FRESH SEED , AS THEY WILL ROT -- PLANT THEM , BOUT 12 INCH DEEP, AND BOUT 2 " APART -- IN BUILDERS SAND, ( YOU CAN GET THE SAND AT HOME DEPOT ETC,)--TO DO THIS, GET A BOX PUT AT LEAST 8 INCHES OF SAND IN IT, KEEP THE SAND MOIST , BUT NOT SOGGY WET, THEY NEED LIGHT TO GROW, -- KEEP THE BOX IN A COOL PLACE , AWAY FROM FREEZING TEMPS, NOT IN A HEATED HOUSE , GARAGE GOOD PLACE WITH A GROW LIGHT ABOVE THEM , WHEN THEY ARE THE HEIGHT YOU WANT SNIP THEM OFF WITH A PAIR OF SCISSORS, GROWING THEM IN PAPER TOWELS IS OK, BUT TAKES MORE CARE TO KEEP THE TOWELS WET, SAND HOLDS MOISTURE LONGER. DONT LET THEM DRY OUT
