Halide Lamp Mogul
Can I use a lower wattage metal halide bulb ? I have a 1000W MH fixture & would like to install a 400W MH bulb
For Metal Halide I know you can't upgrade a higher wattage bulb in a lower wattage fixture. But I was wondering if you could downgrade with a lower wattage bulb ? The lamp base is mogul so a 400 & 1000 W bulb will phisically fit, but will it work? or would I have to change the ballast? Thanks
Yep you sure can.....the max wattage for the ballast is 1000watts the minimum is up to you ...another benefit is the ballast will run cooler and last longer proportionally...however when you start dropping sizes many times the base of the lamp changes but you can change these as well......If it is thermally fused internally just leave that part alone. If the ballast says it uses 3.8amps at 230vac use that as design criteria as well. Don't try to recalculate the ballast losses. Its not enough to matter in the long run. As long as mogul goes in mogul base your good to go...Now here is another one to try sometime...put a HPS in a MH ballast fixture ... The HPS will run like it was made for it...but i have had a hard time getting MH to start in the HPS ...Just a little extra ....Have you heard they are going to stop making Mercury Vapor???...From the E.....
