Down Hydroponic
Hydroponic herbs falling over and have white powder on them?
Hi, I am new to hydroponics, running a three gallon deep water culture system. I use general hydroponics nutrients and their feeding schedule. It stays at about a 6.22 PH and 500ppm. As far as a light goes, right now it is just two fluorescent lights. Right now I am growing spearmint and oregano, but instead of standing up straight they lay down flat (right now the oregano is actually looking pretty good!). Also there is white powder that forms on the top of the rock wool cubes. I change the water and add nutrients once a week. Is there anything else I can do?

When I first planted then, I used quite a few seeds.. maybe too many plants are attempting to grow in the same space?
Its just fungi, its natural.

I need help on making a hydroponic grow system for a school project?
I don't know what to buy, I did some searching online and I hear something about nutrients and I don't know what it is or where to buy it, or how much to give, or how to give it, I also hear that you can make one out of a 'fish tank' .... I did some looking around and there is alot of stuff about 'pumps' and 'hoses' and 'rockwool', I need to get a good grade on this or I will FLUNK so the first person to give me 'step by step' instructions and info on the hoses,pumps,and rockwool, and tell me just what are they needed for and how to use them will get '10 points' Thank you and don't let me down.
Kind of hard to describe without pictures. Using a fish tank is a form of hydroponics called aquaponics, but can be quite simple. Basically set up a fish tank (no plants) with fish, an few air pumps (or a big one) and some air rocks. Also get a filter and pump (you will need one untill the roots of the plants reach the water ). Any pet shop will help you set up this at no extra charge to the parts you buy. If they do then go to another shop
Then get a tray that fits on top of the fish tank. Buy some net pots and rock wool (otherwise known as gordon cubes) and parlite (small battes to clay that are pre prepared) All of there can be found at any garden centre, Put the pearlite in the net pots and then place the rock wool in the top of the pearlite.
Cut holes in the tray and place the filled pots in the holes (make sure that they just fit and don't fall through). Wet the rock wool with water from the fish tank (make it moist not soaking). Make a hole about 2cm deep in the top of the rock wool. Drop your seeds in. As for seeds I recommend basil as this grows fast and will thrive in such a set up. Keep the rock woll moist untill the roots of the plant reach the water in the tank or make a whick from a piece of cloth to the rock wool.
Once the roots are feeding from the tank you do not need to do anything but keep the water topped up and feed the fish. No nutrients are needed as the fish excrement will feed the plants. Also remember to remove the filter as you want the plants to clean the water.
