How many light fixtures (two T-12 bulbs per lamp) can I put on a standard 110 volt line?
This old house we bought 7 years ago has a finished off attic, and it had 2 flourescent fixtures, but I added one more with success (all 3 have been working for over 1 year now and the house hasn't burnt down yet), but I would like to add one more fixture with surface moulding that travels into a dormer space. How do I determine how many I can put on safely?
I'm not sure what the wattage of your fixture of 2 - T12 flourescents is, but if you'll total up all the wattage of all the fixtures on your circuit (breaker) and divide by the voltage (120) you'll get an idea how close to tripping the breaker you are.
A 15 amp breaker/fuse would tolerate about 120 x 15 = 1800 total watts. You generally prefer not running too close to the limit.
[Personally, I'd say stay at or below 80% of the limit.]
A google-search leads me to believe that your 2 T12's would be 2 40 watt, 4 foot long tubes. So 4 such fixtures would be 320 watts, very safely within the typical 15 or 20 amp circuit, assuming the original circuit was wired with proper wire guage. The only other thing I would caution about is that the ballasts in these fixtures usually do generate significant heat that can be a potential hazard, but the fixture design usually minimizes this hazard.

When adding additional lamps to a fixture, what is the additional lumen increase per lamp?
WIth a fluorescent fixture, when you have one lamp, you have the lumen output of that lamp, as you add additional lamps, is there a one-for-one lumen increase in lumen output?
You can not guarantee that the number of lumens will double by the addition of another bulb due to the design of the lamp holder, the wall textures and colors, the distance of the object being illuminated from the light source, and the position of the new bulb with respect to the other bulb.
Lumens are the perceived power of light by the human eye and lamps are designed to provide the desired illumination effect.
For instance, if you place a 40W bulb in a lamp with an opaque square lamp shade on your desk and also place a lamp with a 40W bulb in a metal parabolic lamp with a reflective surface, the appearance of light on your desk will be much greater for the parabolic lamp as opposed to the opaque lamp.
The same is true for the fixtures installed in ceilings. If you put the same number of the exact same fixtures in two different rooms that are exactly the same size with ceiling exactly the same height from the floor but have different textured walls, the appearance of the brightness of the room will differ. If the walls are the same and one floor is tile as opposed to carpet, the same is true.
So in your case, the additional bulb may be positioned such that it can block some of the illumination of the original bulb whose light was previously being reflected to your work surface The end result is that the measurable light at your work surface will not truly double.
Try it with a light meter sometime.
