What is the best filter for a 70 gallon aquarium?
I just purchased a 70 gallon aquarium that I will be using as a freshwater tank, probably some cichlids. What would be the best, most efficient filtration setup? The previous owner used an external canister filter with tubes that lead underneath to the cabinet. I have seen the waterfall types and the under-gravel filtration systems, but which would be the best? I like the idea of the external canister in order to cut down on noise. Which would you recommend, and which brand is the best, most reliable?
I agree with Cammy and Ray S. I've had mine for about 6 years now and the only one that broke was due to me dropping it while cleaning it which cracked the housing. Six years later I can still get parts for them even though the models and styles have changed through the years. I have 4 of them total, two on each 75 gallon tank, and never will get any other brand. Marineland products are the best.

I am making a led light For my aquarium?
The tank is 18" deep ant the leds will be about 4 inches off top of water. will 5000mcd LEDS light the tank up nice with out being over powering??? should i use a 3 or 5 mm??? i need some suggestions from someone who has dealt with leds. thanks (i plan to use about 30 bulbs and they will be about 1 to 2 inches apart)
these would be rather bright lites.the 3mm leds should be fine.
if the lighting is too brilliant,you could always add a dimmer.
the immersed parts of this would have to be water proof,as any
electrolysis could contaminate your aquarium,in spite of the low
power requirements for the leds.
