Portable air conditioner smells like old socks?
I've got a portable air con and it's started to smell like death. I've trawled the internet looking for guides specific to sorting out portable air cons but it seems largely undocumented.
I believe it's some kind of mould or bacteria growing on the heatsinks. The air smells funny both from the cold air exhaust vent that blows into the room and the hot air exhaust vent that goes out the window - so whatever is causing this is just as at home on the hot coils as the cold.
Unsuprisingly, after running for a few minutes, the smell diminishes as things get colder... but it doesn't resolve the problem!
I've taken the thing apart and scrubbed around a bit with a hoover and brush attachment, inside everything looks reasonably clean. The only other thing I can think of is attacking the heatsinks (where the air flows through) with anti bacterial spray and scrubbing with a bigger brush :S
Any ideas?? I haven't got a big brush...
I think you got it right with bacteria.
I remember a few years ago with ex's car had a terrible smell through the vents, a friend who is a mechanic suggested trying a product called frigi-fresh or something like that. It worked but the marriage didn't lol...
