An enlarged heart is exactly what it is: a heart that is larger than a normal heart. Many things can cause an enlarged heart: from an infection to cardiovascular disease (such as high blood pressure), to defected heart valves, to congenital defect. A heart becomes larger than its normal size because it has to work harder to pump the blood. In this case the heart muscles become larger (just like when you exercise your biceps become larger).
