A Sneak Peek at Basic Hydroponic Systems
There is a huge variety of hydroponic systems that you can choose from on the market. And these systems are categorized into six main types:
- Wick system
- Deep water culture
- Ebb & flow system
- Drip system
- Nutrient Film Technique (NFT)
- Aeroponics
These hydroponic systems are the basic types and other systems available on the market are modified versions. Hydroponic systems are broadly classified into passive or active systems. A passive system wholly depends on the growing medium for uptake of nutrients from the supplied solution to the plant whereas an active system works with the help of pump to provide nutrients to the plants. Now let's take a sneak peek at the basic hydroponic systems that are widely used by the beginners as well as the advanced growers.
1. Wick System: Wick system is the first basic hydroponic system that is easily available on the market and is most preferred by the growers. This passive system with the help of wick conveniently moves nutrient solution from the reservoir up to the growing medium. There are many growing media that you can use in the wick system but the most popular ones are vermiculite, perlite, pro-mix and coconut fibers. But, just like other passive hydroponic systems, wick system is incapable to provide enough oxygen to the roots resulting slow growth of plants.
2. Deep water culture: Being an active hydroponic system, this is the oldest system among all the hydroponic systems. The plants in this system float in the nutrient enriched solution, and solution is pushed with ample oxygen to the plant with the help of air pump. This system is ideal one for water loving plants and not favorable for bigger plants with long growth cycle.
3. Ebb & flow system: This hydroponic system is growing in popularity among many hydroponic growers. Ebb & flow system can be useful in different types of growing medium. As the name suggests this active system works on the principle of tides. The nutrient solution used in this system can be drained and reused with the help pump adjusted with the timer. You can purchase a suitable timer depending on the main elements like size and type of plants, humidity, temperature and growing medium. But, with advantages there are also disadvantages like, ebb & flow system is prone to power failures that further leads to dry roots and disturbed water cycle.
4. Drip system: This active system works best with underwater fixed pump and timer. The recovery drip system uses nutrient solution in the best possible way because excess nutrients are recycled. Also, the use of affordable timer makes hydroponics a controlled method of growing plants. The non-recovery drip system work with precise timer that makes watering very precise and there is less wastage of water and nutrient solution.
5. NFT: With the help of a timer, Nutrient Film Technique or popularly known as NFT, works efficiently to provide continuous flow of nutrient solution to the plants for speedy growth. The best feature of this system is that the growing medium here is air therefore the cost of changing the growing medium is reduced. However, NFT demands regular check as there are chances of power cuts and pump failures that can leave the roots and plants dehydrated.
6. Aeroponics: The most advanced hydroponics, aeroponics like NFT uses air as growing medium. The hanging roots are timely misted. A timer is used to control the regular misting of these plants. However, special care needs to be taken because the misting cycles can be interrupted leaving your roots to dry out.

The Six Main Types Of Hydroponics Systems
Theoretically there are six types of hydroponics systems: Wick, Aeroponic, NFT, Water Culture, Drip and the Flood and Drain model. Of course hydroponics systems come in too many variations for anybody to be able to index them, but essentially any of those system variation can be defined as a combination between the primary hydroponics systems. Let's have a look at their main features and see what they consist of.
Describing the main hydroponics systems
The Wick System is the most simple one, it doesn't include complex technologies or moving parts, the solution filled with nutriments and minerals reaches the reservoir through a simple pipe. The problem when dealing with this simple system is the impossibility to have complete control over the amount of nutrients that reaches the plant.
This system is very popular because of its simplicity and thus it is preferred by the beginners in hydroponics systems. Water cultures are another simple technique, the platform that supports the plant floats directly on the solution that feeds the plant. An air pump supplies the oxygen and the nutrients to the roots.
This system is so simple that is one of the best preferred by most trainers that teach hydroponics systems courses. The disadvantage is that a very small number of plants will feel good in this type of system, this is why it is used more for educational purposes.
The flood and drain system will flood from time to time the roots but under strict control from a pump connected to a timer that says when the flood should take place and when to flow back. This system is considered versatile since it is used with many crop types, but it is very vulnerable to any power instability. So if you intend to use this system on a larger scale serious safety measures must be taken.
The Drip is a very appreciated hydroponics systems as it is simple and easy to understand, it consists of a pump that drips the solution on each plant base, the excessive liquid drops back into the recovering system. The pump is controlled by a timer that says when to feed the plants.
The NFT system requires a constant amount of nutrients that flows through a pipe over the roots and then back to the nutrients reservoir. The root is suspended in the air while the solution simply covers the roots from time to time, the system is vulnerable to pump or power problems so it must be carefully implemented.
The Aeroponic system is the most advanced one from a technological point of view, it has the roots suspended in the air while a pump is misting the roots from time to time, it's obvious that entire crops can be ruined if power is lost, so backup techniques are necessary.
Are hydroponics systems a viable alternative?
The truth is that depending on the place where they are implemented hydroponics systems can be a success or a total failure because they have a more expensive production price than classical soil crops, but when the soil is sterile hydroponics systems can be a real gold mine.
Despite the large number of revolutionary systems, essentially they consists of several common elements used in a variety of combinations. Very often back up methods are necessary to prevent failure in the system. As successful as it can be, it is also incredibly fragile.

Nutrient Film Technique: Best Hydroponic System for Leafy Vegetables
Nutrient film technique (NFT) is one of the most widely used hydroponic systems. This technique is easy to use, requires very less maintenance and can be performed by hobbyists, professionals, and beginners.
This technique involves submerging roots of hydroponic plants in a thin ‘film' of flowing water in which nutrients are added. The nutrient solution is pumped through growing tray or growing tube and it flows over the roots. Usually in this technique, no growth medium is used other than air. NFT is useful in growing many fruits and vegetables. Leafy vegetables grow especially well in this technique. Some of the most widely grown leafy vegetables with the help of Nutrient film technique in the hydroponics systems are:
Arugula: Arugula is a favorite vegetable for salads and pasta dishes. Taste of this peppery flavored vegetable by growing it using NFT. Use appropriate amounts of micro and macro nutrients. Arugula is rich in vitamin C. Provision of additional organic nutrients and vitamins will help blossom the growth of Arugula.
Bok Choy: An exotic and tasty vegetable, Bok Choy is also known as ‘Chinese Cabbage'. It is a rich source of vitamin C and fiber. When grown using NFT system, flavor of Bok Choy manifolds.
Cabbage: Cabbage grows extremely well in hydroponic setups and nutrient film technique is a perfect system for leafy cabbages. Cabbage has large amount of foliate and is rich in protein. Cabbage has a distinct flavor which is why it used in many Chinese and Indian dishes. This flavor can be intensified with the help of nutrient film technique. Use higher amount of nutrients like potassium and phosphors in the nutrient film. It will help you grow fresh, crisp, and nutritious cabbage.
Spinach: Spinach grows extremely well in NFT system. Spinach is a very healthy vegetable and is recommended by many doctors and dieticians because it contains vitamins A, C, E, and K. It is rich in iron content as well. Spinach can be cooked as gravy or can be used in salads, quiche, and lasagna. Use of iron rich nutrients in NFT will help you grow greener and healthier spinach.
A proper set up of nutrient film technique system is based on using the right channel slope, right flow rate, and right channel length. Plant growth is dependent on abundance of water, nutrients and air. NFT, because of its design, provides these three elements to plants readily.
However, there are certain disadvantages of nutrient film technique:
- This system is totally dependent on external unstable factors like power supply. If the electricity fails, pump will stop working and roots will not get any water or nutrient solution. This will result in drying of roots and eventual damage to the plants.
- Plant roots get easily clogged in NFT. This blocks nutrient flow, so the roots have to be trimmed periodically.
- Plant yield does not increase considerably in NFT wherein other hydroponics systems show tremendous increase in final produce.
Keeping all its advantages and disadvantages in mind, one has to plan the set up for nutrient film technique. This technique guarantees highly nutritious leafy vegetables with minimal investment.
