Basil Seeds I bought thyme and basil seeds and want to plant them by the window, what soil do I use?
Is there a product out there I can buy or should I just scoop up some soil in the streets???
Use a potting soil if you are going to put it in a pot... here is why...
Soil in the ground is very different from the soil you would use in a pot... it won't have good enough drainage... without making this too difficult to understand... do this...
Grab a sponge...soak it in water and hold it flat as if you were laying it on the counter or something... it holds water right? now hold it vertical over the sink and watch what happens... all the water flows out... its called a perched water table...
the ground is good at holding water... but let it stay in the ground... you need a potting soil because it has everything you need that is perfect for pots... water retention, drainage, and porosity (roots need air too and they won't get it with field soil)

can you propagate rosemary cuttings from the grocery? basil seed jelly?
Hi! ROsemary plant is not very available here in the philippines but the kind you buy for cooking is. Can I start my rosemary plant from these cuttings really used for cooking? They are fresh but kept in the refrigerator. Will the refrigeration make it hard to root? or will the sudden change from fridge temperature to air temperature (around 28 degrees celsius) be to traumatic for the cutting? thanks for the help!
Oh and by the way, it has been raining lately and the basil seeds are still intact to the flowers but the water caused it to form jelly. I thought that it was fungus actually. anyway, will the seeds still germinate as readily as the dry ones? or are they dead? thanks again!
Yes, you can use store bought rosemary shoots for cuttings.Use a rooting hormone and nick the bottom few inches with a sharp knife if they are woody stemmed. The change in temp wont bother them, rosemary takes extended cold snaps very well,it is a very hardy plant.
The other question,.....sounds like a fungus to me,use the dry seeds. My basil gets rained on everyday and the seeds mature and dry on the flowers of the plant,no jelly like substance.
