You need to basically keep their main diet a good cichlid pellet. I really like Hikari's Cichlid Gold pellet, it is a good all around cichlid food that contains everything they need to stay healthy. I have just ordered another pellet food from Hikari called Bio-Gold, it is supposed to be very good for South American cichlids. Flowerhorns are hybrid cichlids, but the species they come from are all South and Central American cichlids, so as long as you keep the diet the same as it would be for any other SA or CA cichlid you should be fine. No food will help the hump get larger on the Flowerhorn, this is a genetic trait, feeding it a specific food will do nothing to the hump that will not happen naturally.

Where does each of the 5 nutrients get digested?
I have a pretty big science test tomorrow, and this question will probably be included. I still do not get where each of the 5 nutrients (carbohydrates, proteins, fats, minerals & vitamins) get digested. I thought they all get digested at the same place? Don't they all turn into boluses and then into chyme in the stomach?

I have been successfully growing african violets for the past year, though i recently started baby plants from leaf cuttings. it's been quite some time, and the plantlets are just under full sized, but haven't yet bloomed. i heard about growing under lights, and i thought i might try this with both my unflowerd ones and my new growing leaf cuttings. could anyone offer me any information on growing under lights? any info would be greatly appreciated. i have a fluorescent "grow light" that was suggested, is this what i need?
Will the grow light work still . .i got it at a pretty good price from a reptile store who sells them for practically a quarter a box, haha.
I fertilize once a month (sometimes more often, if i forget and just fertilize when i fill their auto-water pots)
As has been stated in the previous post, a regular fluorescent light bulb works great. We have an african violet at the office under fluorescent lights and it has been in almost continuous bloom for years.
As far as leaf cuttings...I have one that was grown from a leaf cutting and it has taken almost 2 years for it to start blooming. Also try giving it a shot of fertilizer once a month.

I have an african violet that doesnt bloom?
I have a healthy african violet plant that just wont bloom. The leaves are nice and green and it has plenty of light and but doesnt have direct sun. Im not exactly sure what i should do to try and get some flowers out of it. It got it to grow a couple of flowers once before but haven't gotten any on it now for a very long time.
Maybe this will be helpful:
African Violets prefer 10-14 hours of light per day. "Window" light often isn't enough to force blooms. Putting the plant close under a fluorescent light for a few weeks almost always triggers African violets back into a bloom cycle. If the plant looks healthy, is in the right size pot (a little crowded), gets lots of light and still doesn't bloom, try adding a fertilizer that is higher in phosphorus. Sometimes the plants simply rest for a few months, usually in winter, before starting another bloom cycle.
