LED Grow Lights Any Good?
I'm thinking about getting some new lighting for my hydroponics system... are LED grow lights any good? I've been using HPS for about a year but am thinking about switching over the the LED. I have 4 plants that I will need them for.
I only believe in getting LED bulbs because they are not any more expensive, they have much lower electricity consumption and they provide a much higher quality light than any of the other types of grow lights. Indoor Grow Light Basic Overview - HPS & MH Grow Light Lamps
Metal-Halide HID Grow Lamps
The metal-halide HID lamps ensure the growth of the plants almost like under the natural sunlight: their white light ranges from 2700 to 5500 Kelvin with a color rendering index of 65-75. No wonder they are most often used at the places where color rendering is essential: at the supermarkets, manufacturing plants, stadiums, malls, etc. Metal halide lamps, depending on the wattage, may have the usable life span from 10,000 to 20,000 hours. Horticultural metal halide HID lamps feature red light spectrum, which promotes blooming and fruiting.
High-pressure Sodium Lamps
High-pressure sodium lamps have yellow light (2200K) and are characterized with low color rendering index (22). Nonetheless, they are very long-lived: the life span in some cases may be about two years. High-pressure sodium lamps radiate six times more light per watt of the consumed energy than the incandescent lamps. Their main benefit, however, when used in the horticulture, is the ability to hasten the reproductive stage of the plants growth cycle, improving flowering and fruiting, as well as promoting better and richer yields. This is achieved with the help of the orange/red spectrum of the given bulbs. At the same time, plants grown under these lamps may look unhealthy and pale due to the mentioned color rendering index, which is quite poor. Still, these lights are often used in the greenhouses and indoor gardens (usually as supplemental lights), besides their frequent usage for lighting street and parking lots.
The drawback of these lamps is that they produce much heat, which can cause insects multiplying and diseases development on the plants. To reduce heat production, specifically designed air cooled bulb reflectors/enclosures may be used.
Combination HPS/MH lamps
Another type of grow lamps is combination high pressure sodium (HPS) and metal halide (MH) lamps, where both bulbs types can be enclosed either with two separate ballast assemblies or with a single integrated ballast assembly. Such lights are said to give the perfect spectral mixture of red and blue light along with very good performance.
Switchable, Convertible and Two-way Lamps
A gardener may use either a metal halide lamp or a high pressure sodium bulb with the similar wattage in the same fixture (still, not together) in the convertible, switchable, and two-way lamps. Just insert a metal halide bulb in the fixture when propagating or starting seeds, and then change it with a high pressure sodium bulb during the flowering period of plants growth. Do not forget to place the switch to the necessary setting.

Choosing Adequate Hydroponics Grow Lights
Hydroponics, for those of you that may not know, is a system that allows gardeners to grow plants by using water as a substitute for soil. This new system is great for a number of reasons: increased plant yield, reduced growing time, etc. The only thing that is lacking up until this point is an adequate grow light. The options are numerous and it is up to every plant grower to decide which technology is most suitable for his specific needs. Most grow light systems that are used in regular gardens can also be used in hydroponics gardens. Hydroponics as a new type of farming is becoming more and more popular amongst gardeners.
With the help of grow lights gardeners can now use virtually any space to set up a hydroponics garden. Because new grow light technologies have emerged it is now also more profitable to have a hydroponics garden because with LED grow lights users can now save a lot of power. There are numerous other options apart from the LED grow light system, such as incandescent grow lights, fluorescent grow light systems, HID (high intensity discharge) grow light systems, and numerous other. Each of these systems has a category of users it is best suitable for. Fluorescent grow light systems, for example, are most suitable for cuttings and seeds, while incandescent lamps are utilized by people that take hydroponics as a hobby because of the low costs and decent results.
For farmers which view hydroponics as a business the regular way to go would be HID (high intensity discharge) grow lights. These grow lights can vary in power from 100 watts to 1000 watts, depending on the needs of a specific garden. From an environmental point of view, and retaining the most growth for your dollar, the best possible option when it comes to choosing a grow light system for your hydroponics garden, regardless if you view it as a hobby or as a business, is LED grow lights. This system is unmatched neither in performances nor in operation costs by any of its competitors that are available today. Although they do prove to have higher acquisition costs than other technologies, LED grow light systems are immensely cheaper to operate when compared to the competition.
With a lifespan of over 100,000 hours of operating hours on average, LED grow light systems last over 50 times more than other grow light systems. Also, those passionate about taking care of the environment should know that LED grow light systems as opposed to, fluorescent grow lights for example, do not contain mercury or any other harmful chemicals and are completely safe to dispose of. With significantly lower power consumption and a greater light emission efficiency, LED grow light systems have proven to be the most efficient grow light systems for the hydroponics sector.
