Sanders - the different types
Sandpaper has been in use for smoothening wooden surfaces for a long time. The friction between the coarse surface of sandpaper and uneven wooden surface give the wood a fine finish. A Sander is a device used to make rough wooden surfaces even using sandpaper. Sand paper is attached to the device and moved rapidly along the wood surface. The apparatus is fixed to the worktable and used.
The sander that is mostly used in the case of woodworks is an electric sander. The different types of sanders used in wood work are flap sander, belt sander, disc sander, oscillating spindle sander, random orbital sander, straight-line sander, detail sander, stroke sander, table top drum sander, drum sander and wide-belt sander.
In the starting stages of sanding, a belt sander can be used. There is a continuous belt of sand paper in the machine. They are of various types, i.e. hand-held, stationary etc. The most commonly used power sander is the random orbital sander. This sander is hand held and works by orbital motion with slight vibration. This is usually used for the removal of small extra particles. Orbital sander gives high quality finish to the product and therefore is used in indoor furniture construction. While sanding corners or very small spaces a detail sander can be used. The small triangular sandpaper surface makes it the best one for the role. Since it is handheld, the sander can be used to the worker's convenience.
Vacuum sanders and dustless sanders help to reduce the dust resulting from sanding. These types are most suitable for people who do small scale woodworks or take it up as a hobby. For large scale operations, vacuum cleaners have to be used. Variable speed electric sanders are multipurpose units. The rpm can be controlled by the operator and therefore can avoid over use and wastage of sandpaper. Similarly sanding at a low speed helps to attain a good finish and so reducing the sander speed towards the end helps to get a good finish. For small scale operations a hand held variable speed electric sander can be used while for a large scale operation, a vertical wall mount type belt sander is apt.
While operating high power electric sanders, it is advisable to use eye and ear protection. While goggles can be used for protection of eye, any earplug that cancels out external noise will work as ear protection. Ample ventilation is also required at the work place.

Duct Fan Air
In order to clean the air duct in the house, does an openning ("access window") has to be cut out?
I have a central a/c-heating system with a fan and a heat exchanger in the basement. I'd like to clean the air duct.
Some cleaning companies claim it is not possible to clean it well without cutting out an "access window" somewhere in the duct body of the heat exhanger.
Other companies say such a window once been cut, never seals. They claim the system can be cleaned well without cutting.
Who is right?

The dust and dirt may well fall down into the exchanger, however, it should pass through the vents and fall to the bottom of the unit, then can be accessed from the port at the bottom ( Most have this ) if it doesn't, no biggie...When you fire up the heat, you WILL have a burning smell that will go away in a short time....so NO...I don't think it's needed

Has anyone installed air booster fans in their home ductwork?
I live in a 1925 bungalow that has a renovated upstairs with inadequate ducting. My furnace is fairly new and has enough horsepower, but in winter & summer the upstairs doesn't get enough air circulation. There is only 1 small air return, plus some input ducts that are really long runs from the basement. I am thinking about putting some booster fans inside the ducts to increase the flows to and from the upstairs.
Has anyone done this, and if so what are your recommendations?
Booster fans work well - and some can even be programmed to work with your thermostat - spend the money to get this option and also to get units that are as quiet as possible.

where can i find a long brush for cleaning out the dryer vent exhaust tube?
I've tried Lowe's & Home Depot. Give me more suggestions, please.
I got one at an appliance parts dealer. It's a 4" round brush attached to a 10' flexible handle. It was $13.

What would cause my gas water heater pilot to go out? Does exhaust vent need to be higher?
More than likely your thermocouple is failing. This is the little "tube" that sits in the path of the pilot flame. It "tells" your main gas valve that there is flame present, and that gas can flow.
The thermocouple is an easy fix. Just remove the tube, buy one of simiar length, and reinstall. You can get thermocouples at any Home Depot, Lowes, or hardware store.

Fan Backdraft Damper
Should there be a backdraft damper somewhere in the return duct for a home hvac system?
Getting cold drafts through the return registers when the fan is not on or even if the system is off?
It is a two story house and I have checked the duct system and there are no breaks or leaks. I have looked inside the duct and there is nothing on the back side of the return opening on the unit. Just a square opening nothing more. Would a damper have to be located there (best) if one needs to be put in can it be located in the ductwork? (easiest)
The only time there is a draft is when the Unit Is Not Drawing Air Into The Duct.
There shoud be a backdraft bamper on your outside air intake.
(Might be stuck. Check it.)

A Cool Damper for a Cool Home
