Advantages of Indoor Gardening (Hydroponics) over Traditional Gardening

Why A Vertical Hydroponics System Works So Well
Vertical hydroponic systems are excellent for those that require a high production for a limited amount of space. In a home environment, this system could be used to save space, because there is little space or because the system allows for ease of care due to the fact that all the growing tubes can be reached quite easily.
Under the system of hydroponics, plants are grown without soil but an alternative medium is used to support the roots. This media could be anything from coconut husk to perlite to gravel or pebbles, or even nonexistent as in aeroponics which uses a water mist to supply nutrients to the plant that are suspended in air.
In a vertical system of hydroponics, plant containers are stacked vertically in order to utilize space most efficiently, and any kind of hydroponics could be used as a means to deliver minerals to these plants; whether passive or active, depending on the scale of operation and size of budget.
The Right Environment
Since a vertical hydroponics system is a host to almost 5 times the plants a horizontal system would house, the need to control the environment around these plants is even more crucial. This could range from controlling the amount of light in the facility, the pH balance of the water circulating and the humidity in the air surrounding the plants. Hence a hydroponics structure is installed inside a controlled facility such as a grow tent, grow cabinet or grow room.
Advantages of a Vertical Hydroponics System
Because nutrients are virtually delivered on the spot to the roots of the plants, there is less need for the plants to spread their roots in either direction in order to extract food. This means that plants can be grown much closer together as compared to the traditional means of agriculture, grown soil.
As mineral distribution is monitored and adequate with hydroponic growing, the product that results is superior in nutritional composition as well as colour, taste and size. In controlled environment, controlled provision of light and temperature is also a cost factor, but since this is provided to an increased yield, this cost is divided amongst a higher number of units - decreasing per unit cost and making it more profitable for the grower.

A vertical hydroponics system thus boosts the advantages of a hydroponics system but also combines them with the cost-savings of vertical farming. Vertical farming is a popular method of growing in order to reduce the carbon footprint of farming. Where a homemade hydroponic grower benefits with this system is that they can grow a wide variety of plants but within a small area. They can grow their tomatoes, herbs, lettuce, strawberries, capsicum, radishes and a huge range of other edible items, plus they can grow flowers.

General Hydroponics Garden Methods
As American's look for ways to get healthier, lower their food bills and find home-based hobbies, they're turning to general hydroponics for homegrown fun, fruits, vegetables and flowers. General hydroponics gardening & growing are catching on as a trendy new alternative to traditional backyard gardens.
Instead of traditional hydroponics that use expensive lighting, special hydroponics equipment, and other commercial techniques, average American's are now using a hybrid style of gardening combining the benefits of outdoor soil gardening with the features of hydroponics technology.
General hydroponics gardens produce fresher, more vibrant and tastier fruits and vegetables and more fragrant flowers because gardeners have more control over their gardening environment. These hybrid gardens allow you to control temperature, humidity, plant nutrition, growth phases and harvest timing. Traditional gardening methods do not give you that type of control over these key factors.
As families across America become aware of the dangerous chemicals now being used in food production, they are looking for ways to control their food intake by eating only healthy foods. By growing your own fruits and vegetables at home, you control what goes into these fruits and vegetables providing you with a steady supply of healthful food. Moreover, general hydroponics cultivation saves you money because it gives you cheaper, better produce and an interesting home activity that involves your whole family.

Choose the appropriate system - Most people choose one of the following methods of hydroponics growing:
- The Ebb and Flow system features plant pots filled with sterile grow medium inundated with nutrient-rich water for a few minutes every hour. Often, the pots sit in an upper reservoir that drains into a lower reservoir. The most commonly used grow medium for Ebb and Flow gardens are rockwool, perlite, vermiculite, and lava rock.
- Drip systems use an irrigation approach that relies on drip emitters suspended just above the root zone. These emitters come in varying shapes, sizes and spray patterns, so growers can use the emitters to regulate the amount of moisture reaching root media, and how the moisture is distributed spatially. Drip systems can be fine-tuned in conjunction with temperature and humidity to create a near-continuous feed cycle that pours lots of nutrients and water into plants to produce growth.
Always apply the correct nutrients - Until a few years ago, most people fertilized their crops with generic fertilizer that was designed to be an all purpose fertilizer for house plants and common vegetable crops. But now, you can purchase specifically designed macro and minor nutrients that contain proper ratios and are tested to work specially for hydroponics gardens. These products are designed to work in hydroponics mediums and regulate soil conditions for optimal growth, quality and health.
Shed some light - Growing media is an important consideration for anyone who does general hydroponics gardening indoors, but you won't get any growth without light, and most professional growers are using indoor high intensity lighting such as Metal Halides and High Pressure Sodiums. In an ideal world, we would all have secure outdoor areas where massive amounts of sunshine hit every day, but most professional specialty growers grow indoors or outdoors using some artificial lights. Of course, if you are considering gardening only in the summer, then light should not be a major problem.

With the new compact fluorescent bulbs, what is the plan for dimming the light?
I have had the X10 system almost since it was invented and I'm concerned about not being able to dim these new bulbs, or turn them on and off for that matter, using the X10 modules. I often dim lights while watching television . Furthermore, I have a motion sensor in my home that turns a light on when entering the room and it does not work with the new type light bulbs.
With the x10 system, I assume the lights are canned fixtures with R-type or PAR-type lamps. GE, Phillips and TCP are manufacturing lamps that are dimming rated and should work with the x10 system. For the motion sensor, the non-dimming commercial rated lamps (Phillip's Marathon II, TCP, Sylvania's commercial line, or GE commercial line) will work with a minimal affect on their life. For a higher end system like you have, I recommend purchasing commercial grade lamps from a electrical distributor and not your general hardware store. As for the mercury content, most local waste collection will take them as hold hazardous waste (the same as paint, motor oil, or general house hold cleaners) and they contain less then 1/10,000 the amount of mercury as a thermometer and less then 1/1,000,000 the amount contained in a non-digital household thermostat.

Why do my light bulbs keep burning out?
My light bulbs keep burning out over my kitchen table. Can there be something wrong with the light or the wiring? My landlord says that nothing can be wrong, but I beg to differ and I'm tired of changing the bulbs every few months.
Depends. If you leave them on a lot it may be just the hours you are burning them. But where mine usually burn out the fastest is on the first floor ceiling where the kids bedrooms are on the 2nd floor. Or stair-wells. Answers: Vibration. The kids jump up and down. Run down the stairs ,etc. If this could be a possibility try using "long life bulbs", halogen, or my favorite CF to save energy. Make sure for safety you check the fixture and ensure those optional bulbs won't cause a fire.
