Ancient Hydroponics Gardens
The word “hydroponics” is derived from two Greek words: cidra, meaning water, and punikos, meaning labor; thus, literally “waterworks.” Contrary to popular belief, hydroponic gardening is an ancient form of agriculture, going back 3,000 years. There are references to the cultivation of plants directly in water in Egyptian records dating back to the time of the New Kingdom and the “Woman-King,” Pharoah Hatshepsut around 1460 BCE.
The best-known grow systems of the ancient world were the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. Also known as the Gardens of Semiramis, the Hanging Gardens operated on the principles of hydroponic gardening. Reputed to have been located near Al-Hillah in present-day Iraq, this elaborate grow system has become regarded as one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
The Hanging Gardens were built by King Nebuchadnezzar around 600 BCE. His wife, Amytis, was from Media, whose people were the ancestors of the modern Kurds. The country of Medea was a mountainous one, roughly corresponding to present-day Kurdistan, northern Iran and Azerbaijan. Legend says Amytis became homesick for the mountains and the flora of her homeland; Nebuchadnezzar had the Gardens constructed for her. According to Greek historians of the time, the Hanging Gardens, a water pipe led into a well tower, which supplied water via a number of vaults for fruit trees growing in a layer of asphalt.
Centuries later, Italian traveler Marco Polo, who reportedly visited China during the late 13th Century CE and introduced pasta to Italy, commented on what he called the “Floating Gardens.” Around the same time on the other side of the world, the Mexica – one of the native peoples who later formed the Aztec Empire of Mexico – built a city called Tenochtitlan on the shores of Lake Texcoco. Where Mexico City stands today, the Mexica constructed an extensive urban center that included a type of early hydroponic system upon which plants were cultivated on the surface of the water. These early Mexican “floating gardens” were developed out of necessity, because arable land was at a premium in the area. Called chinampas, they were actually small, artificial islands that were created by scooping up mud from the marshy areas bordering the lakes. This mud was ultimately held together by tree roots; food plants were cultivated on these “islands,” and were amazingly productive.
The modern history of hydroponics actually begins in 1627, when Sir Francis Bacon’s Sylva Sylvarum was published posthumously. In this treatise, Bacon – an English philosopher and contemporary of Shakespeare – wrote about the cultivation of terrestrial plants without soil. Although Bacon died before his theories could be explored, the idea of water culture caught on as an area of scientific study throughout the remainder of the 17th Century. By the 1860s, German botanists Julius von Sachs and Wilhelm Knop had perfected the first nutrient solutions for soilless agriculture, and modern hydroponic gardening was born.

Use Carbon Air Filters When Gardening
Use carbon air filters when gardening. You’ll be hard pressed to find a more cost-effective and efficient method of water and air purification than activated carbon filters. If you are serious about maintaining the health of your hydroponics supplies, you’ll want to invest in a good air purification system as well. There are several types on the market today that are available via mail order online as well as local purveyors of hydroponic supplies, and you’ll need to change out your carbon filters periodically.
Why Carbon Air Filters?
Like people and animals, plants benefit from fresh air, and air purification systems can be the environment free of organic contaminants that can damage indoor gardens and compromise the health of hydroponic systems. Carbon filters, because of their unique chemistry, are excellent at doing this job and in fact are used aboard submarines of the U.S. Navy.
This last fact is also applicable to you; without proper air purification systems with activated carbon filters, your indoor horticulture project is likely to give off unpleasant smells.
Choices
You can choose from three different kinds of carbon filters; however, these are not all effective for air purification.
The three major types are:
• Powdered activated carbon (PAC)
• Granulated activated carbon (GAC)
• Extruded activated carbon (EAC)
In addition, there is “impregnated” carbon, polymers coated carbon and activated carbon fiber, which is actually a form of cloth. The granulated GAC type is actually the best for use with hydroponic systems and indoor gardens. These granulated activated carbon filters have a much larger surface area, and thus are better for air filtration than the powdered variety of activated carbon air filters.
It’s Pure Magnetism
Carbon is “activated” by oxygenation, which creates millions of microscopic pores on the surfaces of the granules in which organic molecules become trapped, as well as chlorine. Carbon air filters are less effective when it comes to inorganic chemicals however. This is not usually an issue, because plants don’t give off such chemicals, and it’s unlikely that any chemical toxins will enter your garden space unless you live next door to a DuPont or Union Carbide facility.
There Are Limits
Activated carbon filters can absorb a tremendous amount of organic contaminants, but eventually reach the saturation point. Therefore, it is necessary to change these filters as recommended by the manufacturer. The useful working life of these filters can be extended substantially be using them in conjunction with HEPA filters, however. In addition, HEPA filters can trap particulate matter that carbon filters may miss – and vice-v

LED Grow Lights Any Good?
I'm thinking about getting some new lighting for my hydroponics system... are LED grow lights any good? I've been using HPS for about a year but am thinking about switching over the the LED. I have 4 plants that I will need them for.
I only believe in getting LED bulbs because they are not any more expensive, they have much lower electricity consumption and they provide a much higher quality light than any of the other types of grow lights. Metal-Halide HID Grow Lamps
The metal-halide HID lamps ensure the growth of the plants almost like under the natural sunlight: their white light ranges from 2700 to 5500 Kelvin with a color rendering index of 65-75. No wonder they are most often used at the places where color rendering is essential: at the supermarkets, manufacturing plants, stadiums, malls, etc. Metal halide lamps, depending on the wattage, may have the usable life span from 10,000 to 20,000 hours. Horticultural metal halide HID lamps feature red light spectrum, which promotes blooming and fruiting.
High-pressure Sodium Lamps
High-pressure sodium lamps have yellow light (2200K) and are characterized with low color rendering index (22). Nonetheless, they are very long-lived: the life span in some cases may be about two years. High-pressure sodium lamps radiate six times more light per watt of the consumed energy than the incandescent lamps. Their main benefit, however, when used in the horticulture, is the ability to hasten the reproductive stage of the plants growth cycle, improving flowering and fruiting, as well as promoting better and richer yields. This is achieved with the help of the orange/red spectrum of the given bulbs. At the same time, plants grown under these lamps may look unhealthy and pale due to the mentioned color rendering index, which is quite poor. Still, these lights are often used in the greenhouses and indoor gardens (usually as supplemental lights), besides their frequent usage for lighting street and parking lots.
The drawback of these lamps is that they produce much heat, which can cause insects multiplying and diseases development on the plants. To reduce heat production, specifically designed air cooled bulb reflectors/enclosures may be used.
Combination HPS/MH lamps
Another type of grow lamps is combination high pressure sodium (HPS) and metal halide (MH) lamps, where both bulbs types can be enclosed either with two separate ballast assemblies or with a single integrated ballast assembly. Such lights are said to give the perfect spectral mixture of red and blue light along with very good performance.
Switchable, Convertible and Two-way Lamps
A gardener may use either a metal halide lamp or a high pressure sodium bulb with the similar wattage in the same fixture (still, not together) in the convertible, switchable, and two-way lamps. Just insert a metal halide bulb in the fixture when propagating or starting seeds, and then change it with a high pressure sodium bulb during the flowering period of plants growth. Do not forget to place the switch to the necessary setting.
