Keeps Herbs
How do I keep fresh herbs, fresh?
And how long will they last? Would it be better to try to grow my own and what are 5 common ones to have? I am on a budget.
I've had good luck trimming the bottom of the herbs about 1/4-1/2 inch, putting them in a jar of water (with only the very bottom of the trimmed part submerged) and then covered in a plastic bag and stored in the fridge. I've stored both basil and cilantro like this for weeks. However, if the roots on the basil look healthy, I'd skip trimming them and just keep them in water. I've kept basil that has sprouted roots in a vase on my kitchen counter for over a month.
the way an aunt of mine keeps her cilantro fresh is to loosely wrap it in a damp paper towel, put the whole thing inside of a paper lunch bag and then put that into a plastic bag that you'd get from the produce section of the grocery store - i'm talking about the bags you use to put that damp head of lettuce in before checking out. she's kept cilantro this way for weeks. i think one of the tricks is that the cilantro is dry before wrapping the paper towel around it. kind of crazy, but the results are great.
Some herbs are so easy to grow and hold up so good that you owe it to yourself just to give it a try. Example, Rosemary is as easy to grow as can be. And I use it to garnish everything. Once you get a plant well established, you can use the mother plant to start lots 'n lots of cuttings that you give away as gifts to friends.
Be sure to get a really nice Culinary Rosemary for your mother plant b/c you'll be propagating so many cuttings to give away. My mother plant grows in the ground, not in a pot.

What are the top ten spices/herbs I should keep in my cabinet?
I just got married and we got an apartment together. I don't know much about cooking; i can only follow steps from a box. What are some spices/herbs I should keep at hand while cooking. What spices go with which meats? Thank you!
Any spice can go good with any meat, but the 10 spices that I use most would be 1 - garlic/onion (good for breads and fish powder) 2 - Cinnamon (good for desserts and warm drinks) 3 - Oregano (good to sprinkle on any meal) 4 - Paprika (good for asian food or lentils) 5 - Rosemary (good for chicken rubs) 6 - Ginger (good for asian food, desserts, and warm drinks) 7 - Curry Powder (very spicy and good for anything else spicy) 8 - Basil - (same as oregano) 9 - Salt - (of course good for anything with just a little bit of flavor) 10 - (good for anything again) Herbs should only be kept for 6 months at most or they will get old and bad.

What kind of herbs can speed along a miscarriage for a pregnancy diagnosed as not viable?
I have a friend whose found that her pregnancy stopped developing at 5 weeks, but now 2 weeks later she has not expelled the embryo. She does not want to take the pill the doctors are offering because she doesn't want all the hormones. I've heard that blue cohosh or black cohosh would help out, what do you know about it?
And yes this is really about my friend, I myself have my tubes tied. 
* Parsley: Parsley is a good herb to start with. You can take it along with Vitamin C supplements. Boil two and half cups of water and add one once of parsley to it. Remove it from heat immediately after adding parsley and cover it. Steep it for about 20 minutes. You should drink 2-6 tablespoons of this parsley tea four times a day. Another way to induce a miscarriage with parsley is by inserting a fresh sprig of parsley into the vagina as far as possible. Remove it after 12 hours and insert a new one. Repeat this for every 12 hours. This prepares the cervix for release.
* Vitamin C: Vitamin C is the least toxic and the most effective way to induce a miscarriage. Continue taking high doses of Vitamin C orally for every hour until your period starts. You can take up to 6000 mg of Vitamin C a day. It is very effective in bringing on menstration [menstruation].
* Angelica/Dong Quai: it is a uterine stimulant that helps in relaxing the uterus. It not only stimulates delayed menstruation but also encourages the uterus to expel its contents by stimulating contractions. If you are taking a tincture, add 5-15 drops of it to a cup of water and drink for every 4 hours. And if you are taking capsules take 1000 mg every 4 hours.
* Black Cohosh: It is an ability to ripen the cervix and therefore used before childbirth. It also helps in relaxing and opening the cervix. Take one-fourth to one teaspoon of its tincture, 4 times a day or 500-1000 mg of the capsules every 4 hours. As Black Cohosh alone can't induce a miscarriage, you have to it either with Angelica/Dong Quai or Blue Cohosh.
* Blue Cohosh: It is also a uterine stimulant that helps in toning the uterus. It stimulates the contraction of uterus and is very effective when used in combination with Black Cohosh and Pennyroyal. For tinctures, take 1/4-1 tsp. For every 4 hours. For capsules, take 500-1000 mg every 4 hours.
* Pennyroyal: It is one of the best effective herbs and natural ways for inducing miscarriage. You can take 20-60 drops of its tincture for every 3-4 hours. Don't take the essential oil extracted from it internally, as it is poisonous.

blue and black cohosh capsules to induce labor?
what is the correct dosage ? anyone have any experience with these herbs? the blue is 500 mg and the black is 540mg.

Blue cohosh can give you contractions to strengthen your uterus. I can't remember the dosage as I took it 10 years ago (upon the advice of my midwife.) I think I took it around 39 weeks. You should phone a natural path. They can tell you the dosage. Good luck.

How do I trim an indoor royal palm. It is growing gigantic and I need to control it a bit...?
I have an indoor growing royal palm. I must be taking very good care of it watering it once a week and fertiziling every three months or so. It is now growing very large and I want to trim it down a bit. When is the best time to do it? Where is the best place to cut the fronds? Will the fronds if placed in palm soil germinate a new plant from the frond?
Fronds germinate? This is the first I've heard of this. As far as I knew they were just leaves. I also don't know how you would "trim" a royal palm except to cut off the dead fronds. If you cut off the growing portion, where the leaves come from, it will kill the plant. That is the only portion that is capable of producing leaves as Royal palms never produce branches like real trees. There are about ten varieties and they grow from ten to thirty feet tall. Sometimes suckers will grow from the base of the tree. These can be grown into new trees.
If it's outgrowing your house now might be a good time to find an outside location for it.

Anyone ever tried those indoor herb growing kits with lamps?
Has anyone ever tried those indoor herb growing kits (as seen on t.v.)), with the grow lights/lamps? Especially that new one? if so, how did it work for you? Did it grow things well? What else besides just herbs did you try growing in them?
I am a really good gardener, and have at least 50 houseplants, but I had no luck with the herb garden contraption. . . I think the seeds weren't very good, but I took the pots with the holder, and have different cacti growing in them and it looks awesome Well worth the money just for the display IMO. . . GL!!!!

Herbs Flowers Kitchen
What veggies, fruits or herbs could I grow in full shade and clay soil?
The place I am thinking of is clay soil, but has had evergreen-type leaves dropping onto it for a few years and then rotting down. It is in the shade of two large trees (although not under). I live in SW Britain, so there's enough rain.
I want to plant something productive - either fruit, vegetables or herbs, as it is an extention to my kitchen garden. If you can't come up with anything productive then feel free to say a flower or something.

I grow plenty of herbs, fruit and veg each year in my clay soil.
Perennials - raspberries, blackberries, thyme, mint, fennel, rosemary, lemon balm and so on.
Last year - pumpkins, tomatoes, chives, peas, runner beans.
This year - runner beans, carrots, peas, strawberries, tomatoes and other things I haven't decided on yet.
All are doing / did fine with the exception of the chives that were pot grown in soil and then didn't get watered.
i think the clay soil will be your real enemy here rather than the shade. still, i would give the following a try, they all like moist slightly shady positions and grow well in this way in my garden in scotland:
1. Spinach: does best in moister ground out of full sun (hot, dry location makes it bitter and run to seed quickly).Grow it as an annual.
2. Mint (esp. water mint, Mentha aqautica). Mine grows in the shade of a wall under a cotoneaster and flourishes year after year. Perennial
3. Sorrel: (Rumex acetosa). Arrow shaped green leaves with a pleasant acid tang, somewhat like rhubarb. use in salads or in soups. again, mine grows well in its moist shady setting and this is again one of those plants that will run to seed faster when grown in a sunny dry spot. Perennial and should keep you in salad leaves for almost the whole year.
4. Chives (Allium sp.)- can deal with sun or partial shade. Perennial
5. Monkshood- (Aconitum napellus). i know you said you wanted edible stuff but couldn't resist throwing this in too. most definitely NOT edible (but very attractive), grows in moist woodlands and likes shade. handle with care as even the sap is toxic in small quantities (wear gloves!) but very pretty dark blue/purple flowers shaped like a monk's cowl. Perennial.

Any tips on decorating my apartment?
I'm on a budget so looking for affordable ideas to decorate my apartment. I love to have plants around me especially kitchen garden type herbs. Would it be a good idea to invest in potted herbs and flowers . IThere is little space on my patio and not much sun. Thanks
I think you should get a window box and attach it to the outside railing of your patio. Fill it with dozens of herbs like oregano, parsley, and basil! You should put a comfy chair with a colorful cushion near the plants so you can enjoy the view and the smell!!! Don't buy potted plants unless you really want to...seeds work just as well...and they don't cost that much. Add a light if there isn't much there already so the plants can still thrive. Paint the patio whatever color you want and create a homely and aromatic space for everyone!
