Is there a way to test pH levels in a liquid without purchasing a test kit?
I'm reading up on Green Cleaning practices, and the Green Clean Institute states that cleaning products are safest with pH levels closest to 7, which is the pH level for "pure" water. So I wanted to test some products that I have here in the house.
You need some sort of equipment. The cheapest and easiest is litmus paper. This is a strip of paper to which you apply a drop of the liquid. It will go red for acid; base for blue. The box should have a little scale on for your estimation. It is not precise but is inexpensive and should let you know what the pH of an aqueous solution is.

Lead testing kit..?
I bought a lead testing kit this afternoon because I have an 11 month old, and we have a ton of hand-me-down toys from other family members with older kids. With all the lead toys recently in the news, I thought it was best to check the older ones as well.
My question is, once I use the lead testing kit on some of her toys, what should I clean them with? It reiterates on the package that the testing kit is an irritant and to call poison control immediately if it is inhaled or ingested. I hate to put anything like that near her toys, but at the same time, I need to know whether they're safe or not.
Is there any way to make sure the testing solution is completely off of her toys before I give them back to her?
I don't know for sure.
But I would suggest washing them with hot water and soap.
Simple enough I guess. Use a clean washcloth if you need to (with the hot soapy water).
