Can African dwarf frog live in water with aquarium salt?
I have a 2.5 gallon bow front tank with a small filter which I know the frogs legs wont get stuck too. It has a male betta which has been with the frogs before and got along just fine. His aquarium has aquarium salt, being I read somewhere that they live a lot longer in it. The main question is, can African dwarf frogs live in water with aquarium salt?
African Dwarf frogs do ok with a small amount of aquarium salt, as do bettas, but you might want to limit your use of this otherwise wonderful product. While almost all fish can benefit from a small to moderate amount of aquarium salt, too much of it can also undermine your fish's health. This problem is easily corrected by doing frequent water changes and only adding aquarium salt once in a while. (In my own tanks I do 50% water changes every other day and I add salt only about once a month, although I know that most people think this is too much work... most folks get by just fine with only 10% weekly, and only doing a big water change at least once a month).
Bettas also generally live in salt-free environments, but in aquaria they do benefit from very small amounts of salt, as do all freshwater fish. It's not so much that salt makes them live longer, but it does promote the development of a healthy slime coat (which is essential for fish to help ward of external parasites) and combat the effects of osmotic stress (which is the loss of electrolytes most often associated with changes in water parameters and chemical/mineral content). Aquarium salt also serves as a deterrent for most underwater microorganisms that can be harmful to a fish's, such as flukes and protozoans like ich.
So anyway, yes... your frogs will be ok with a little salt in their water. Just not too much.
